Taiwan plans food and alcohol ad restrictions
Date: 01/02/2010
On 28 January, it was reported that the government of Taiwan, which is also currently drafting a bill to introduce taxes on unhealthy foods and alcohol, is also planning to ban HFSS food advertising in children's TV channels. The bill is due to be submitted to the Yuan, the Taiwanese Parliament, later in the year and could be fully implemented by 2011.
These advertising restrictions follow a similar initiative in South Korea, where the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs announced the government will ban HFSS food and beverage advertising between 5pm and 7pm on all TV channels as well as during all children's programmes. We understand that the measures will come into immediate effect and will be reviewed against the goal to reduce childhood obesity rates in South Korea in the future.
