WFA participates at Romanian food code launch
Date: 11/12/2008
WFA today represented the industry at the launch of the Romanian "Ethical Code for Food Product Advertising Targeting Children" in the Romanian Parliament in Bucharest. The code is a national adaptation of the EU pledge programme (www.eu-pledge.eu) in which a number of leading food manufacturers voluntarily commit to changing the types of food they advertise to children under 12 years. The code will be administered by the Romanian Self-Regulatory Organisation, the Romanian Advertising Council (RAC).
The initiative was facilitated by Romanian liberal Member of Parliament, Magor Csibi, in close collaboration with the signatory companies and the National Authority for Consumer Protection. Speaking at the launch, Mr Csibi, who is also Vice-President of the Environment and Public Health Commission of the European Parliament (EP), expressed his satisfaction at the multi-stakeholder process which had led to the code's adoption: "Today Romania becomes the first European country to adopt such a Code. I am happy that we have reached this compromise with all the interested parties in a relatively short time. This shows that we are all preoccupied by our children's future and are capable to generate a constructive dialogue to reach this goal."
