Australian Communications & Media Authority interim report steers clear of restrictions on food advertising
Date: 30/08/2008
On 27 August, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) released the draft version of the 2008 Children's Television Standards (CTS) encouraging the industry and the public to submit their comments. No general restrictions on the advertising of food and beverages are introduced.
The current standards contain a range of restrictions on advertising to children, including a complete ban on advertising during preschool (‘P') programs. The 2008 draft CTS include:
- Current advertising restrictions are maintained.
- Restriction on the use of licensed characters, popular personalities and celebrities to promote and endorse products immediately before, during and after ‘C' and ‘P' periods.
- No general restrictions imposed in relation to food and beverage advertising.
The closing date for comments is 17 October 2008 while the new CTS are expected to be finalised in early 2009.
