More than 1,400 people, including marketers, advertisers and marketing communication experts, media owners, academia and students attended the 18th Colombian Advertising Congress in Cartagena earlier this month. Co-hosted by the Association of Colombian Advertisers (ANDA), the congress is the most important national industry event of the year.

Dubbed “From Ideas to Ideals”, this year's congress was built around three central themes: the tendency of advertising to mirror fundamental human principles, the fact that increasingly brands seem to have a sense of purpose and the way in which new technologies turn consumers into creators by stimulating participation.

At the congress, which was officially opened by ANDA's Executive President, Elizabeth Melo, ANDA presented WFA's Global Brand Purpose Research, whose results were first revealed at the 2014 Global Marketer Week in Sydney. The WFA research, conducted between August 2013 and February 2014 among 829 respondents from 33 countries, representing over 170 billion US dollars in marketing spend, showed that marketers around the world overwhelmingly believe purpose needs to be part of a successful brand building strategy.
