The Chinese Association of National Advertisers (CANA) has co-hosted an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Advertising Standards Forum and Mentoring Workshop in Beijing on 8-9 August

The event successfully brought together government and advertising industry participants from 16 APEC economies to discuss advertising standards and regulations. It was organized together with the Australian Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) alongside other global industry partners including the WFA, the International Chamber of Commerce and the European Advertising Standards Alliance.

The scope of CANA's APEC workshop was to formulate a mentoring plan for the establishment or improved operation of self-regulation across APEC countries in line with international best practices in the field of advertising standards.

The output was a series of recommendations and an “Action Agenda” that was submitted to the APEC's CTI3 (Committee for Trade and Investment). Both the CTI3 and the APEC's Senior Officials Meeting have already approved the Agenda. It is hoped that the Action Plan will feature in an APEC Ministerial Statement in November.

APEC has focused on the importance of promoting regulatory convergence in the field of advertising standards across the 21 APEC markets to not only ensure responsible advertising content but to incentivise foreign investment and promote trade by making it easier for companies to do business in multiple markets across the region through the removal of unnecessary barriers to trade.

The presentations from the Forum and Workshop are available on the APEC website.
