APEC throws support behind advertising self-regulation

Back to the overview
APEC's Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) has approved an Action Plan on Advertising Standards and Practice Development, which gives added momentum to the development of best practice advertising standards across APEC markets. The action plan was put forward by APEC's Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI) following a workshop organized and hosted by the China Association of National Advertisers (CANA) and the Australian Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB).
The workshop took place on 8-9 August in Beijing and brought together representatives from APEC's advertising standards organisations and civil servants responsible for advertising alongside global industry partners, including the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), the European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). WFA led and moderated a session on best practice in advertising code development.
The purpose of the workshop was to focus on the fundamental principles of advertising standards with a view to formulating a mentoring plan for capacity building among APEC economies on the basis of a set of international best practice approaches. It is hoped that the Action Plan will feature in an APEC Ministerial Statement in November.
APEC has focused on the importance of promoting regulatory convergence in the field of advertising standards across the 21 APEC markets to not only ensure responsible advertising content but to incentivise foreign investment and promote trade by making it easier for companies to do business in multiple markets across the region through the removal of unnecessary barriers to trade.
