The Spanish Advertiser Association (AEA) has warned against a possible merger between TV channels Antena 3 and La Sexta. If the merger were to take place, 85.6% of TV investments would be controlled by only two groups, a situation that that could risk resulting in a less competitive landscape as well as a loss of quality content.
The Spanish TV ecosystem has only recently undergone considerable changes. The public broadcaster, Radio Television Española (RTVE) dropped all advertisements in 2010 and more recently Telecinco and Cuatro merged. Given the possible ramifications for competition, AEA has publicly voiced its concern, requesting a rejection of the merger as well as a gradual return of advertising to RTVE, a situation which would benefit both marketers and consumers in Spain.
